Characteristics of learning Faculty of Engineering

We will introduce the characteristics of learning in the Faculty of Faculty of Engineering.

To develop human resources who are always at the forefront of science and technology and who will lead the times

Message from Dean

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology Faculty of Engineering has a history of more than 150 years, originating in Ministry of Home Affairs Industrial Promotion Board Naito-Shinjuku Branch? Sericulture Experiment Section?, which was established in 1874 on the site of the current Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. There are many science and engineering faculties in Japan, but our university is a national university consisting of only two faculties, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Agriculture. However, in terms of the size of the faculties, our university Faculty of Engineering is a large faculty nationwide, and six departments have been established: "Department of Biotechnology and Life Science", "Department of Biomedical Engineering", "Department of Applied Chemistry", "Department of Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering", "Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering", and "Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science" by taking advantage of the strengths of education and research in the integrated field of engineering and agriculture. When assigned to a laboratory, there are only about 4 to 5 students per Supervisor, and dense research and education are carried out through research guidance. It is a characteristic of our university that many world-renowned research projects are being conducted, and in the laboratory, students and Faculty Member work together to promote research with excitement every day.

Looking at the trends in the world over the past 10 years or so, we can see that social transformation from economy to ecology is progressing rapidly. Through the marriage of engineering and agriculture, which is exactly what our university excels at, our university is taking on the challenge of solving global issues such as food, carbon neutrality, energy, robotics, AI, and life sciences, and this is reflected in our undergraduate education. In addition, although Faculty of Engineering is a school of practical learning, it also focuses on basic research, and is characterized by the development of large-scale research from the elucidation of scientific theories to social implementation. In addition, the Faculty of Engineering of our university has a consistently high ratio of female students, and we are focusing on expanding diversity by prioritizing the placement of foreign Faculty Member and female Faculty Member in each department.

More than 80% of our undergraduate graduates go on to graduate school at Faculty of Engineering, which is a key research university, and most of our graduates are active as researchers and engineers at companies, universities, and public institutions on a global scale. Backed by such a history and tradition, as well as the activities of our graduates, I believe that we have a very favorable environment when it comes to finding a job. However, the period of social activity after employment exceeds 40 years. During this time, the development of science and technology, including AI and information technology, will undoubtedly create many jobs and occupations that are no longer needed. In other words, once you get a job, you will be safe for the rest of your life. In order to play an active role on the front lines of society for a long time in such an era, it is clear that superficial knowledge alone cannot compete. As something that only people can do, I would like you to become a person who creates "something" from "nothing". First of all, please set your aspirations at this important time in your life, work hard with your schoolmates, talk with Faculty Member, and enjoy Campus Life independently. At the same time, I would like you to know the essence of academia and its fun, and become a person who can compete with the world in research. For more than 40 years, I hope that you will acquire the ability to continue to grow and play an active role at the forefront of society. To that end, we provide education and research with a focus on ensuring that you can feel your growth as a person.

In this way, Faculty of Engineering will strongly work to help you become the person you want to be and maximize your future value through education and research.

Admission Policy (Student Acceptance Policy)

  1. Students should have an inquisitive mind and a creative mindset about the truths of nature, an interest in science and engineering, and the drive to use the knowledge they have acquired to think independently and cooperate and collaborate with others in order to realize a sustainable society.
  2. Those who have basic textbook-level knowledge of the major subjects and courses studied in high school, are able to solve problems, and have knowledge, insight, and skills gained from practical and experiential learning in science, mathematics, and English subjects.

Purpose of learning/Characteristics of learning

Faculty of Engineering provides students with the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of science and technology in the field of engineering, specialized knowledge and techniques, as well as the liberal arts that will help them develop logical thinking skills, expressive abilities, the ability to accept diversity, and the ability to work collaboratively in order to demonstrate their expertise.

Our goal is to nurture individuals who have the expertise necessary to carve out their own path in life with autonomy, and the ability to consider and judge the various challenges facing humanity from multiple perspectives, organize their thoughts, and express them to others in a way that is easy to understand.

4-year learning flow (curriculum)

The curriculum is organized along the lines of "Developing intellectual professionals in engineering through Keyaki-style education - Nurturing the trunk of expertise and spreading the branches of diversity." With department names that make it easy to understand the specialty or academic field that will be the student's major, each department is designed to encompass multiple academic fields, establishing expertise and cultivating the interdisciplinarity required to survive in an increasingly diverse society.

The group of subjects learned over the four years consists of "general education subjects," "specialized basic subjects," and "specialized subjects." Students can begin studying basic specialized subjects from the first semester of their first year in order to develop the core of their expertise, and in their third and fourth years they can take liberal arts courses and in-campus internships to expand their diversity. Through lab experience assignments in the third semester of the third year and graduation thesis in the fourth year, students develop the ability to independently and proactively plan and carry out research.

Admission Policy (Student Acceptance Policy)

The aim of the Faculty of Faculty of Engineering is to nurture creative students who seek the truth about nature and have a manufacturing mindset. We hope to enroll students who are able to converse with people with a variety of ideas and who have the passion to lose track of time and devote themselves to something that interests them.

Purpose of learning/Characteristics of learning

The Faculty of Faculty of Engineering aims to train individuals with the fundamentals and specialized knowledge and skills related to science and technology in the field of engineering, to cultivate the ability to discern the essence of the problems that need to be solved, and to develop broad-based, specialized knowledge that can be used to realize a sustainable society.

4-year learning flow (curriculum)

The curriculum is divided into 11 courses according to the characteristics of each academic field, and the curriculum is organized based on the objectives and philosophy of each course.
The subjects studied over the four years consist of "Liberal Arts Subjects" and "Basic and Specialized Liberal Arts Subjects." The curriculum is flexible, so it is possible to study a specialty in the first year and take general humanities subjects in the fourth year. In the graduation thesis in the fourth year, students will develop the ability to independently and independently create and carry out a research plan.
